The eleventh installment of Coachella began on a high note. After a disastrous experience in the parking lots last year, I was pleased to find that Coachella added additional signs and color-coordinated paths to help attendees’ get to their cars. Appropriately, we were parked along the yellow path, and we were serenaded with chants of “Follow the yellow brick road” as we made our way towards the fairytale-like festival. A smorgasbord of performances by the likes of IO Echo, Lord Huron,DāM-FunK, Poliça, Johnny Marr, Local Natives, Beach House, Purity Ring, and How to Destroy Angels awaited us. musikgruppen all stars 2012

Kicking off 2013 with a warm look back at 2012. Top shelf tracks lovingly picked by music geeks spanning the globe.

Stockholm pals, you know the drill—if you’re in the city on Wednesday night, I implore to go have a drink at Snotty in honor of DJ Smooth Transition. If not, please, take a listen to this soundtrack and joining me in dreaming a dream of days gone by.

One does not turn to Beach House for effusive stage banter. With a series of shadows dancing across their faces from sidelights, and a backlighting provided by a sheet of theatrical stars, the Baltimore-based duo kept chatting at Tuesday night’s show to a bare minimum. That is, save for a few perfunctorily thank yous. “It’s not that I don’t want to talk to you,” said keyboard/vocalist Victoria Legrand, acknowledging the duo’s seemingly aloof presence, “It’s just that it’s complicated.” (via Beach House (With Wild Nothing), El Rey Theatre, Los Angeles, CA | Under The Radar)

dj set: musikgruppen, del 3

So, through the magic of technology, I’ll be DJing tomorrow night with some friends in Stockholm at Musikgruppen, del 3. At the same time, I’ll also be sitting in Los Angeles, going through the motions of a regular work day. Technology…magic? No! Technology sucks. Where’s my jet pack/transporter?

Not in Stockholm? Wrap your ears around my contribution here: Musikgruppen Club Night 2

It’s deceptively easy to see the career of French musician Serge Gainsbourg as one continuous punchline. With his distinctive vocal style—a muttered sing-speech—parodied almost into oblivion since his rise to popularity in the 1960s, the inclusion of his music in film or television seems to automatically indicate the horny bachelor, the ill-conceived seduction, or (horror of horrors) hipsters aiming to embrace kitsch with both hands.

Although autumn had officially hit several days earlier, one would have been hard pressed to find any signs of the new season at Vampire Weekend’s unseasonably hot Hollywood Bowl debut Sunday night. Also making their sweat-drenched bowl debuts were African/Swedish band The Very Best, and Baltimore. Maryland’s Beach House.

arlier this year, vocalist/keyboardist Victoria Legrand and guitarist Alex Scallyalso known as Beach Housereleased their third album, Teen Dream. A collection of gauzy chamber-pop songs so enchanting Grizzly Bear’s Ed Droste repeatedly twittered about its “insanely perfectly gorgeous amazingness,” the album has garnered the hard-working duo a string of well-deserved accolades and (very) preemptive declarations of “best album of the year.”

:.. Coachella 2010 Day 2 Recap: Beach House, Camera Obscura, Muse, and More | Under The Radar ..:

Day two started out much like day one, in fulltilt. Despite a bevy of physical ailments left over from yesterday’s marathon, making it to Camera Obscura’s set on time was worth another painful sprint across the field. However day two was light on the heavy hitters, and after the initial close call, I didn’t have to hustle to see sets from Beach HouseEdward Sharpe and the Magnetic ZerosHot ChipMGMT, and Muse.

Indie kids beware—your heroes just got co-opted. While hardly a cohesive gathering, from Death Cab For Cutie doing what they do best (channeling youthful melancholy), to Lykke Li’s unexpected gravitas, it would be difficult to ask for a better group of ambassadors.
