During the 2011 London riots, Still Corners’ Greg Hughes was at work on the follow-up his band’s recently released debut, Creatures of an Hour. His Texas twang softened by over a decade in Britain, the American multi-instrumentalist recalls the city in confusion, as he hurried home to the Greenwich-neighborhood apartment that he shares with bandmate and Still Corners vocalist, Tessa Murray.

The Eurovision Song Contest was established as way to bring European countries together after World War II. The first competition was held in the town of Lugano, Switzerland, on May 24, 1956. Since then, it’s become a sprawling behemoth that makes American Idol, The Voice and X-Factor look downright quaint. The first year, seven countries entered. The London-based duo (multi-instrumentalist Greg Hughes and singer Tessa Murray) continue to bring their shadowy world into focus on their sophomore album, Strange Pleasures. Recently, Susanne Sundfør had a brush with celebrity when an M83 song that features her vocals was featured in the closing credits of the the sci-fi film, Oblivion. The singer/songwriter leans over her salad conspiratorially as she describes attending the premiere for it. Her blue-lined eyes twinkle at the memory. Despite having just flown in a few days before, she was determined to stay through the screening to see the closing credits. Determined, that is, until jetlag kicked in, and she fell asleep.

In March, in the midst of performing as part of the yearly Austin, Texas music-industry grind known as SXSW, DIIV frontman Zachary Cole Smith made the following statement on his band’s blog: “Here, the music comes last…The ‘music’ element is all a front, it’s the first thing to be compromised. Corporate money everywhere but in the hands of the artists, at what is really just a glorified corporate networking party. Drunk corporate goons and other industry vampires and cocaine. Everyone is drunk, being cool. ‘Official’ bureaucracy and all their mindless rules. Branding, branding, branding. It’s bullshit…sorry.”

2013 marked the second year of Coachella’s duel-weekend format. While the bands for each weekend remained the same (acts such as Bat For Lashes, Jessie Ware, Tame Impala, and Savages all turned in two equally impressive performances), the twin events allowed for twice the amount of fashion. But it’s hard work trekking out the desert oasis. Thus, most people admitted that they put more effort into dressing for weekend one. Fun fact extrapolated from that statement: There is a large number of fashionistas with disposable income enough to attend two rounds of Coachella per year. Mental haze threatening to become an impermeable fog, I took the quality over quantity approach to the final day of Coachella, and caught impressive sets from DIIV, Jessie Ware, and Father John Misty. And you know what? I loved every last one of ‘em. The phrase is “all killer, no filler” but alas I am not prepared to stoop to that level of cliché.
